PowerFile Blu-ray Archive Systems

Based on Blu-ray media libraries that utilize current generation 50GB Blu-ray discs, in combination with a high-performance NAS Server with up to 34TB of spinning disk cache, PowerFile Blu-ray Archive Systems offer industry-leading cost/GB and scalability options for near-line storage with capacities that range from 4TB to 280TB (with data compression) in a single rack cabinet.

By “blending” a high-performance storage platform (NAS Server) with an economical, efficient storage platform (Blu-ray Media Library), PowerFile has created an intelligent and efficient archive system, what PowerFile refers to as Hybrid Storage.

Corporate data centers are experiencing unprecedented data growth, and maintaining these large data sets with current technology is presenting many difficulties to IT managers. Among the main challenges are keeping up with storage growth amid tight budgets, maintaining backup and recovery service levels, managing increasing utility costs, and providing users with rapid access to critical data when they need it most.

A hybrid storage platform provides an alternative location to store infrequently accessed data files, freeing up capacity on expensive primary storage devices. The hybrid storage tier maintains online access to data, while minimizing acquisition cost, energy consumption, ongoing maintenance, and reducing backup windows.

A hybrid storage platform also eliminates the manual data recovery process by enabling immediate retrieval from a random-access Blu-ray disc, already visible to a file system, rather than from a sequential-access tape, that requires a time-consuming restore process using a backup/restore application. In addition, the hybrid tier offers greater reliability than tape, significantly reducing the risk of data loss.

The PowerFile Active Archive Appliance (A3) is ideal for small companies, departmental workgroups, or enterprise-level applications that require long-term archival storage to meet the data retention requirements of laws such as SEC 17a-4, Sarbanes-Oxley, and HIPAA, to name a few.
